21st August 2015
Recognizing the one and half decade of effort of NIIT Ghana in empowering more than 55,000 students with much needed job-oriented ICT skills in the Ghana and neighboring countries, The New Ghanaian magazine awarded NIIT Ghana with “Lifetime Achievement Award in ICT Education in Ghana”.
The top honour to NIIT Ghana was given for its unparalleled contribution to the development of ICT education in Ghana and preparing Ghana as the most preferred ICT Hub for the West African Sub-region. In a full house ceremony at the scenic Volta Hotel in Akosombo on 9th July 2015, Lifetime Achievement award to NIIT Ghana was handed over by the Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Dr. Bernice Adiku Heloo in the presence of Mr. Kofi Portuphy, National Chairman of NDC and other high profile dignitaries.
The journey which started back in May 2000 under the flagship of Dr. Kapil Gupta, when NIIT launched its first ICT training centre in Accra has contributed immensely towards development of ICT sector in the region by providing skilled ICT manpower to propel their growth. Discussing this achievement during his interaction with the media, Dr. Kapil Gupta stressed on the need for job-oriented technical education in the country, which is experiencing high level of unemployment mainly due to more graduates coming out from public and private tertiary universities. He expressed that graduates from universities only can’t solve this unemployment problem, as the jobs available in the industry requires professional technical skills, which university education alone can’t provide. Students must go for professional technical qualification also from institutions like NIIT apart from their academic qualification to make themselves suitable for the available jobs. With the ever increasing number of private universities in the country and other centres of distance learning managed by public universities, students are less interested to take professional technical courses, which must be changed. Since NIIT started its operation in Ghana fifteen years back and fulfilled its mandate to bridge this digital divide and offer industry relevant programs as per the current market trend, NIITians are employed in the ICT sector which needs skilled manpower.
NIIT has a tradition of pursuing academic excellence, value based education and providing a conducive environment for overall personality development of students. This holistic approach has won several awards and accolades for the institution on different platform, locally as well as globally.
